Gross Motor Skills
Occupational Therapy helps children develop gross motor skills that are essential for participation in everyday activities, play, and learning. Therapy targets areas such as core and upper limb strength to support posture, stability, and endurance. Motor planning—the ability to think through and carry out movements—is developed through engaging, multi-step tasks. Bilateral integration (using both sides of the body together), motor accuracy, and balance are addressed through fun, movement-based activities that challenge coordination and control. Strengthening these foundational skills helps children move more confidently and efficiently, supporting their independence, attention, and self-esteem.
Fine Motor Skills
Occupational Therapy supports the development of fine motor skills, which are essential for tasks like writing, cutting, pasting, dressing, and using tools. Therapy focuses on building hand strength, refining pencil grip, supporting the development of hand dominance, and encouraging effective use of both hands together (bilateral coordination). These skills are practiced through playful, meaningful activities that help children build confidence and independence. Importantly, strong gross motor foundations—such as good core strength, postural control, and shoulder stability—are essential for fine motor success. By developing the body from the center out, at Jumpstart OT we ensure that children have the stability and control they need for precise and coordinated hand movements.
